Almost everyone watches the three-digit score. Very few people read the profile that produces it. That gap is exactly where most credit problems hide.
The score is a summary, not the source
Your score is a snapshot calculated from the data in your report at a moment in time. If the underlying data is wrong, the score is wrong too—and chasing the number without checking the data just treats the symptom.
The profile is the actual record
Your profile is every account, balance, date, status, inquiry, and personal-information field, across three bureaus. That’s what lenders’ systems and the scoring models actually read.
Why this matters for disputes
You cannot dispute a score. You dispute specific reported information. Understanding the profile is what lets you point to “this balance is wrong,” “this DOFD was re-aged,” or “this account reports three different ways.”
A better question than “how do I raise my score?”
Ask instead: “Is everything on my profile accurate, consistent, and verifiable?” Answer that honestly and the score tends to take care of itself.
