People often use “dispute” and “validation” interchangeably, but they are separate rights aimed at different companies.
Debt validation (FDCPA)
Validation is a request you send to a third-party debt collector, usually right after they first contact you. Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act you can ask them to prove the debt—who the original creditor was, the amount, and that they have the right to collect. Until they validate, collection should pause. This is the first move when a collection account is unfamiliar.
Credit dispute (FCRA)
A dispute goes to the credit bureaus (or directly to the furnisher) about the accuracy of what is on your report. The bureau must reasonably reinvestigate—generally within 30 days—and correct or delete anything that cannot be verified.
How they work together
For a collection you do not recognize, validation often comes first. If the item is reporting inaccurately on your file, a dispute addresses the report itself. Many situations use both, in sequence. Your consultant can sequence them for your specific accounts.
